By followers: (likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ followers × 100. A post with 120 interactions on a 4,000-follower account has a 3.0% engagement rate by followers. Use it to track your own trend: the denominator only moves when your audience does.

By reach: (likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ reach × 100. The same 120 interactions on a post 2,400 people saw is a 5.0% rate by reach. Use it to judge the content itself: it ignores how many of your followers the algorithm chose to show it to.

By views: (likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ views × 100. The same 120 interactions on a video with 6,000 views is a 2.0% rate by views. Views count every play, including repeat plays by the same person, so this rate sits at or below the rate by reach for the same post.

Profile-level rate: compute the per-post rate for your recent posts (the last 10 to 30 is a common window) and average them. Averaging the rates, rather than pooling all interactions into one division, stops a single viral post from hiding a declining baseline.

How do I calculate engagement rate?

Add up the interactions on a post (likes, comments, shares, saves), divide by your audience figure, and multiply by 100. Divide by followers for a comparable trend line, or by reach for how that specific post performed. For a profile-level rate, average the per-post rates across your recent posts.

Should I divide by followers or by reach?

Both are valid and answer different questions. Engagement by followers is stable and comparable over time, but understates posts that reached beyond your audience. Engagement by reach reflects how the people who actually saw the post responded; you need reach data from the platform's own analytics for it. For video, dividing by views is a third option: views count repeat plays, so that rate sits at or below the rate by reach.

What counts as an interaction?

Likes, comments, shares and saves are the common core. Each platform adds its own: reposts and bookmarks on X, saves and shares on Instagram, reactions on LinkedIn and Facebook. Be consistent about what you include, otherwise your rates are not comparable from week to week.
