What counts as engagement on Instagram

  • A post's insights show Interactions, which Instagram describes as likes, saves and shares. Comments are counted under the post itself.
  • Since 14 November 2024, Views replaced Impressions and Plays as Instagram's main metric. Views count every time your content appeared, including repeat views.
  • Reach counts unique accounts, so it is never higher than Views, and a rate by reach is never lower than a rate by views.
  • Instagram does not publish an engagement rate of its own. The number depends on the formula you choose, so pick one and keep it.

Where to find these numbers on Instagram

  • For a post: open your profile, tap the post, then tap View insights.
  • For a reel: open the Reels tab on your profile, tap the reel, then tap View insights.
  • Insights are available to any public account, personal or professional.
  • Your follower count is at the top of your profile.

Measure it the same way every time

How do I calculate my Instagram engagement rate?
Add the post's likes, comments, shares and saves, divide by your follower count and multiply by 100. For a profile-level rate, work out the rate for each of your recent posts and average them.

Does Instagram show engagement rate?
No. Instagram's insights show Views, Reach and Interactions, but not a rate. You divide the interactions by the audience figure yourself, which is what this calculator does.

Do I need a professional account to see Instagram insights?
No. Meta's help pages say insights are available to any public account, personal or professional. A professional account is only needed for things like promoting posts.

Should I divide by views or by reach on Instagram?
Reach counts unique accounts; Views count every appearance, repeats included. Reach gives the cleaner picture of how people responded. Views are useful for reels, but the rate comes out lower because rewatches inflate the denominator.
