What Threads gives you natively
Threads ships moderation controls, not automation. Reply controls decide who may reply to a post. Reply Approvals, launched in late 2025, is a toggle you switch on per post: replies wait in a Pending tab until you approve them, and only then appear publicly. Hidden Words filters replies containing words or phrases you list, with its own list separate from Instagram's and optional time limits. All three are gates: they decide what shows up and from whom. None of them answers anyone.
So if your goal is “stop junk appearing under my posts”, the native controls cover it free. If your goal is “keep the conversation moving when I'm not in the app”, nothing built into Threads does that today.
What the official Threads API allows
Meta opened the Threads API to third-party tools, including reply management: reading the replies on your posts and publishing responses to them. That is the sanctioned route for auto-reply, the same pattern as Meta's other platforms: you authorise a tool against your own account, it acts through the API within rate limits, and no password ever leaves you. Tools that ask you to hand over credentials instead are the unsafe kind.
How PersonaXpand auto-replies on Threads
Disclosure: PersonaXpand is our product. It reads the replies on your Threads posts and drafts a response the way you would write it, trained on your own posts, through the official Threads API. Approval mode holds every draft in your inbox for a one-tap approve or edit; autonomous mode sends routine ones alone once you trust the voice. A mention guard stops ping-pong loops, so two automated accounts can never talk to each other forever, and per-account cool-offs keep everything inside platform limits.
Honest limits: PersonaXpand answers the replies on your posts. It does not automate Threads DMs; its DM coverage is Instagram and Facebook. Threads auto-reply is included in the same flat $12 a month plan as the other four reply networks and all eight posting networks.
Set it up in four steps
- 1. Connect your Threads account with one OAuth click. No password is shared; you can revoke access from Threads at any time.
- 2. Let the AI train on your own posts so replies come out in your voice rather than a template's.
- 3. Turn on auto-reply in approval mode. Every drafted reply waits in your inbox for a tap.
- 4. After a week of edits and approvals, move routine replies to autonomous if you want to. Sensitive ones stay flagged to you either way.
What to auto-reply on Threads, and what to leave for yourself
Threads conversations move fast and run long, so the replies worth automating are the quick, friendly ones: thanks, a short answer to a common question, a pointer to a post you already wrote. Those keep a thread alive while it is still being shown to people, which is when a reply counts most.
Leave the rest to yourself: arguments, complaints, anything personal, and anything that needs a fact only you know. PersonaXpand draws that line for you. It holds sensitive replies instead of answering them, it never guesses a price, a date or a detail about your business, and each person gets one automatic reply per post, so a busy thread never fills up with bot answers.
- Good to automate: thanks and praise, simple repeat questions, “where can I read more?”
- Keep for yourself: disagreements, complaints, personal stories, anything about money or bookings
- Never automatic: replies that need a fact only you know; PersonaXpand leaves those for you
