Where Instagram story mentions go
When someone tags your account in their Story, Instagram sends it to your direct messages as a story mention. From there you can reply in the chat or add their Story to your own. Instagram doesn't answer these for you: there is no built-in setting that thanks people for mentions.
The rules any tool works within
- Professional account. Messaging automation works for Business and Creator accounts.
- 24 hours. Apps can reply within 24 hours of the person's message, which for a mention means within a day of it arriving.
- A reply, not a reshare. Tools answer in the chat. Adding their Story to yours is still done by you in the app.
- One thank-you, not a campaign. A mention is a gift; a sales sequence in return feels like the opposite.
Thank-you replies to adapt
- “You just made my day, thank you for sharing this!”
- “Thank you so much for the shout-out! Hope you enjoy [it].”
- “Love seeing this. Thanks for taking us along!”
- “This means a lot, thank you! Let me know how you get on with [it].”
- “Thanks for the mention! I'm adding this to my Story.” (only if you will)
Thank every mention in your own voice
Disclosure: PersonaXpand is our product. Story mentions arrive with your other Instagram messages, and PersonaXpand drafts a reply to each in your own voice through Instagram's official API, so the hundredth thank-you doesn't read like the first. Approve each with a tap, or let routine ones go out on their own.
If the person also asks something, such as a price or where to buy, it doesn't guess: that message is left for you. Each person gets at most a handful of automatic messages a day, so nobody is bombarded. More in Instagram DM auto-reply.
