Can you post on Instagram from a computer?
Yes. Instagram's website, instagram.com, lets you create a post from any browser on a Windows PC, Mac, laptop or Chromebook. You can share a single photo, a carousel of several photos and videos, or a video, which Instagram publishes as a Reel.
The one big exception is Stories: the website has no Story upload (checked October 1, 2026). There are reliable ways around that, covered in how to post Instagram Stories from a PC, Mac or laptop.
How to post on Instagram from a desktop, step by step
Menu names move around between updates, so look for these labels rather than exact positions:
- 1. Open instagram.com in Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox and log in.
- 2. Click Create (the plus icon) in the left-hand menu, then Post.
- 3. Drag your files into the window, or click Select from computer.
- 4. Choose the crop. Portrait 4:5 (1080 by 1350 pixels) takes up the most space in the feed.
- 5. Edit the photo or trim the video, then click Next.
- 6. Write the caption, add a location or tag people, and click Share.
How to post a carousel from a computer
In step 3, select several files at once: hold Ctrl on Windows or Cmd on a Mac while you click them. You can also add more with the stacked-squares button in the bottom corner of the crop screen, and drag them into the order you want before clicking Next.
Instagram allows up to 20 photos and videos in one carousel. Keep them the same shape, because the first item's crop is applied to the rest.
How to post a video or Reel from a computer
Videos go through the same Create button, and Instagram publishes them as Reels. The specs that upload cleanly, and why a feed video becomes a Reel, are in how to upload a video to Instagram from a PC.
What still needs your phone
- Stories. There is no Story upload on instagram.com. Meta Business Suite, an API posting tool, or a browser mobile-view trick get around it: see posting Stories from a computer.
- Instagram music. The licensed music library is only in the phone app. From a computer, put the soundtrack into the video file before uploading, using audio you have the rights to.
- Posting the same thing elsewhere. A post on instagram.com goes to Instagram only; Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn and the rest each need their own upload.
How to schedule Instagram posts from a desktop
Instagram's own scheduler, opened to every public account in March 2026, is built into the phone app (see how to schedule Instagram Reels). From a computer, two routes are reliable:
- Meta Business Suite (business.facebook.com) is free and schedules posts, carousels and Reels for professional accounts (Business or Creator) linked to a Facebook Page.
- A posting tool on Instagram's official API. Disclosure: PersonaXpand is our product, and it is built to be easy to use and beginner friendly. Upload your photos or video once on your computer, pick Instagram and any of your other networks, and post now or pick a time. Each network gets its own version of the caption, and when comments and DMs come in, it replies in your own voice, with your approval first if you want it.
