Instagram post size: the table

3:4 or 4:5: which one?
In the app, Instagram keeps a photo at its original resolution when it is 320 to 1080 px wide with an aspect ratio between 1.91:1 and 3:4. So the tallest post is 1080 x 1440 px.
Scheduling and management tools post through Instagram's API, which only accepts 4:5 to 1.91:1. A 3:4 photo sent that way gets cropped or rejected. If you schedule posts, use 1080 x 1350 px.
Since early 2025, according to press reports, profile grids show posts as taller rectangles. Instagram hasn't published that crop in its help center, so keep the subject in the middle of the frame.
Carousels, Reels and Stories
- Carousel: up to 20 photos and videos in the app (10 through other apps). The orientation you pick applies to every item in the post.
- Reels: the app accepts 1.91:1 to 9:16, at least 720 px and 30 frames per second. Use 9:16 to fill the screen.
- Reel cover: Instagram's help page recommends 420 x 654 px (1:1.55). In the feed, Instagram uses the middle square as the cover.
- Stories: 9:16, 1080 x 1920 px. Videos up to 60 seconds per story; longer ones are split into several.
Why did my photo get cropped?
- Ratio out of range: taller than 3:4 (or 4:5 through other apps) or wider than 1.91:1. Instagram crops to the nearest accepted ratio.
- Too narrow: under 320 px wide, the photo is enlarged and loses quality. Export at 1080 px wide.
- Mixed carousel: every slide follows one orientation, so a different-shaped photo gets cropped.
