Can you schedule Stories in the Instagram app?
No. Instagram's March 2026 update opened native scheduling to every public account, but it covers feed posts, carousels and Reels. Stories were left out, and that holds for professional accounts too. If you want a Story to go out at 9am without you posting it at 9am, you need a tool outside the app.
Two routes hold up: Meta Business Suite, Meta's own free desktop console, and scheduling tools that publish through Instagram's official API. Both work from a browser on a PC or Mac; which one fits depends on how much you batch and where else the same Story needs to go. Posting one right now instead? That's a different job: see how to post Instagram Stories from a computer.
Route 1: Schedule Stories free with Meta Business Suite
Meta Business Suite schedules Instagram Stories from a desktop at no cost, as long as your Instagram account is a professional account (Business or Creator) linked to a Facebook Page:
- Go to business.facebook.com and sign in with the account that manages your Facebook Page.
- Confirm your Instagram account is connected under Settings, then Linked accounts.
- Click Create story, choose the Instagram account, and upload your image or video.
- Pick Schedule instead of Share now, set the date and time, and confirm.
Route 2: Schedule Stories with an API tool
Tools built on Instagram's official API schedule Stories the same way they schedule everything else: upload from your computer, pick Story as the destination, set the time. PersonaXpand does exactly that, and because Stories sit in the same queue as your feed posts and your other networks, one sitting on a laptop can line up the whole week everywhere at once.
The API route also skips the Facebook Page requirement in the posting flow itself: connect Instagram once through the official login and the queue is the workflow from then on. It's the same flow you'd use to post to your other networks at once.
A batching workflow that actually sticks
Stories vanish after 24 hours, which makes gaps far more visible than a slow feed. The fix isn't discipline, it's batching:
- Design all your Story cards in one session, at 1080 by 1920 pixels, before touching any scheduler.
- Queue the week in one sitting, one or two Stories a day, rather than deciding daily.
- Put them in the windows your audience is actually awake for; the free best-time-to-post planner has the general windows per platform.
- Leave the interactive layer for live moments: a scheduled Story can't carry a poll sticker, so save polls and questions for Stories you post by hand.
Story specs to schedule against
Scheduled Stories are less forgiving than manual ones, because there's no phone-side editing step between the queue and the publish. Get the file right up front:
- Dimensions: 1080 by 1920 pixels, the 9:16 portrait ratio. Anything else gets cropped or letterboxed.
- Images: JPG or PNG, up to 30 MB.
- Video: MP4 or MOV, up to 4 GB, with up to 60 seconds per Story card.
- Safe zones: keep text and logos out of roughly the top and bottom 250 pixels, where Instagram overlays your profile name and the reply box.
